Claim to Fame: Donated $2,000 at the peak of Covid-19 before we had any product to even sell to people. As we were getting ready to launch, and before our inventory had arrived, Covid-19 hit really hard, so many people in our community were losing jobs, being furloughed, and hurting. Even though we are bootstrapped using retirement money, we still felt it was the right thing to give away money via a photo grant - competition.
The Culture
The best thing about working at PEDRO AND TAILOR is:
As two minorities (Hispanics) we are really excited about building a brand whose identity is filled with the celebration of cross-cultural individuals and BIPOC. Levi Tijerina and myself (Josh Perez) really find a lot of joy in finding unique ways to help celebrate cultures. We are best friends turned business partners and have tons of fun working together on a daily basis. Levi is also great at making amazing coffee for us, and we have good music going on.
BUT, truthfully, the best thing is that we both have small daughters and they are often running around the home office. It makes things a bit tricky however, but showing them at such early stages what hard work and starting a business looks like is such a joy and privilege.
When we’re not working, we’re:
Hanging out with our families, climbing, hiking, biking, traveling, riding dirt bikes and motorcycles.
What we’re reading:
The Design of Everyday Things
What we’re listening to:
Olalla by Blanco White is usually on repeat. Also enjoying Norrland by Gidge.
If they made a movie about our workplace, it would be called:
Big Dreams
Inclusion in the outdoors matters because:
The outdoors is for everyone. These spaces are meant to be shared and many national parks lie on sacred land from indigenous and Native Americans. Showcasing that, and sharing those stories, builds empathy and allows us to use the outdoors as a means of celebrating all people.
Five years down the line, it’s our hope that:
We’ll have made big changes in the way we approach business and the outdoors. Creating lasting products built on authentic stories helps people see their own lives and stories reflected in the world at large and we want to be a part of making people feel heard and represented in that larger story.
